Description

The 2019 vintage of this celebrated chardonnay speaks well to its Sonoma Coast site just miles from the Russian River and the cooling influences of the Pacific Ocean. Delightfully aromatic, the nose is fragrant with white flowers, golden delicious apple, poached pear and lemon pastilles. The wine’s attack follows with alacrity, delivering a vibrant motet featuring notes of kumquat preserve, citrus, and tarte citron (lemon curd, meringue, flaky crust!). Aged 17 months sur lie in 20% new French Oak, the wine displays a marvelous complexity made possible through barrel fermentation and the application of partial MLF. Delicate but plush with a delightful acidity, the wine finishes beautifully, true to form. Decidedly pretty from the first, the wine unfolds beguilingly with a light richness and complexity to reveal its acclaimed Heintz vineyard origins with aplomb and grace. With this vintage of our fabled chardonnay from the Heintz Vineyard being ten years in the making; we tip our caps to Charlie Heintz, whose family has been farming brilliant Chardonnay in Sonoma since 1912.

The Charles Heintz Vineyard is located in Occidental, near the rocky Sonoma County coastline. The 30-year-old Chardonnay vines are planted on deep, desirable Gold Ridge Sandy Loam top-soils – to which many attribute the unique varietal expression shown by Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grown in the Sonoma Coast and Russian River appellations. The nearby Pacific brings deep and cooling fog over the vineyard nightly during the growing season, encouraging patient ripening and the development of delicate flavors.
