2018 Black List XXV Magnum
Nearly inky, and rapturously ruby red in hue, the 25th edition of our most coveted wines is a fitting tribute to the deft and discernment that attends the artistry of Philippe Melka and our winemaking team. The nose is vibrant, arousing the olfactory with wafts of black fruit, cherry, and a nod to marzipan. More follows in the wine’s attack, as notes of ripe blackberry, dark cherry, cola, spice, and earth bring it on. Aged eighteen months in 50% new French Oak, the wine’s refined structure is marked by a pleasing acidity and just
enough grip to remind us of how well lower Napa cabernets can play with Petite Sirah secured from the acclaimed confines of the acclaimed upper valley. Fresh and direct, yet mindfully well-mannered, this captivating red blend offers winsome layering and depth, ultimately finishing with refinement and resolve …in a manner that reminds us of the storied David Copperfield, whose Dickensian arc so ably sets the standard for any narrative, literary or otherwise.
The backbone cabernet for this notable wine is grown on a unique parcel located in the Soda Canyon district, just south of the Stags Leap AVA at the cooler end of Napa Valley. Here, the soils are loamy, rocky and deep, supporting bigger and stronger vines that lend themselves to generous, layered wines noted for refinement and nuanced acidity. The marvelous Petite Sirah hails from the historic Palisades Vineyard, located directly below the high cliffs of the Palisades in a narrow riparian canyon, one mile north
of the town of Calistoga.
