Howell Mountain

The wait is over. Here comes 98-points…inviting your unblinking gaze not to wander from its deeply sensual ruby hues. The nose of this noble offering is true to its Howell Mountain heritage: vibrant, bold and deliciously expressive of ripe black fruit, Bing cherry, and licorice, with hints of juniper berry and baking spices. While the expectation that comes with its pedigreed terroir and adroit winemaking sets an awfully high bar, the 2016 vintage of our most storied wine stands and delivers. On the attack, the greeting announces the wine’s arrival with gravitas and vigor. Ripe black fruit, licorice and hints of juniper berry and baking spices make for an ignition point that is brazenly throaty and cocksure. Aged 25 months in 50% new French Oak, the wine beckons beyond its framed oak confines to issue its “call of the wild”. Brooding and brutish, the wine shows restrained power and aggressiveness to be unleashed without restraint among collectors who dare. Sleek, powerful, brooding, and seductive without caring to be stylish, the wine invites comparison to the new American muscle cars whose street legality should likely be revoked. After inspecting the wine’s deep ruby hues, one is quickly drawn to its alluring aromatics of bold mountain fruit, redolent with black cherry, plum and hints of earth and savory sage. The attack does not demur, expounding with notes of crushed blackberries, cassis, graphite, cedar and baking spices in an arcing narrative that announces the fabled story of Howell Mountain itself, from which the rich history and great traditions of Napa Valley winemaking originate. Aged 22 months in 42% new French Oak, the wine divulges a delicious dialectic of depth, density, and dimension; striking, and strident upon introduction; knowingly forthright with grainy tannins through the mid-palate, only to finish satisfyingly in wizened and soulful repose. While comparisons may be made between artisan winemaking and the care applied to establishing a well patinaed leather jacket (Steve McQueen’s favorite Belstaff Racer; or Marlon Brando’s Schott One Perfecto made famous in The Wild One), one cannot help but hear the incomparable Joe Walsh beckoning us with his oft-touted refrain*, …customarily offered in concert with a toast made to fine friends and family over a thoughtfully prepared meal, tasty wines and easy conversation:

I go to parties sometimes until four
It's hard to leave when you can't find the door
It's tough to handle this fortune and fame
Everybody's so different, I haven't changed

They say I'm lazy but it takes all my time
(Everybody say oh yeah, oh yeah)
I keep on goin' guess I'll never know why
*Life's been good to me so far

Ruby red in the glass, this tantalizing blend signals its arrival with precociously heady aromas of black cherry and plum, complemented by hints of lightly toasted anise and baking spices. True to the storied upper reaches of Howell Mountain, flavors of ripe blackberry, black tea and peppercorn give way to a rustic mid-palate, with a pleasing acidity, and notable structure in-play. Aged 26 months in 31% new French Oak, the wine’s oak framing reveals what comes when skilled handling is deftly applied to fruit from this heralded appellation. The result reveals a teasing, but feisty and focused Hillside Blend, whose muscularity and nimbleness present a beguiling, layering of juxtapositions. With the wine’s pre-release staged during this summer’s season of movie blockbusters, we invite you to consider how this blend might compare to the lithesome Diana, Princess of the Amazon’s (a.k.a. Gal Gadot of Wonder Woman fame). 84% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon
