Gloriously “deep purple” in hue, aromas of blackberry, black cherry, and peppercorn announce the arrival of our Black List XIX with a declarative bravado. True to its Howell Mountain origins, this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon presents itself as a spirited front-man to what Las Posadas can bestow. Smatterings of cassis layered with notes of ripe black plum, licorice, sweet oak, and spice create a rich rendition of flavor, complexity and texture . When framed by the grainy tannins that engender the grip and structure emblematic of this noble appellation, the ride to the finish issues a satisfying and resounding deliverance.
Boldly expressive, exuberant, and on the verge of brashness, this Black List selection is bound to please in a fashion that is reminiscent of the classic American rock n’ roll icons, Van Halen …featuring the rambunctious likes of Eddie Van Halen, David Lee Roth, and company …who rose to acclaim exhorting all of us to…Jump! (…which is much easier said than done from 2100 feet above the fog line.)

Bright ruby red in hue, our Black List XVIII beckons with enticing aromas of black and red fruits, and hints of shaved cedar. At the outset, the stealthy attack invites inspection with a layered salutation of flavors marked by blackberry, black cherry, plum, earth and cherry cola. Alluring, but focused, the wine’s underlying vigor reveals itself with a pleasing acidity, and purposeful structure defined by finely grained tannins that help affirm a satisfying and lengthy finish. While “pretty and pleasing” are likely to be recorded as first impressions of this coy cabernet; the wine’s ultimate bearing reveals a more deliberate and purposeful actor. For those who may be familiar with the Emmy-award winning television series, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, you might find some resemblance between this Black List selection and the series’ truly marvelous lead character, Miriam “Midge” Maisel, played by the fetching Rachel Brosnahan…to widespread critical acclaim.

Deep ruby red in hue, our Black List XVI is a handsomely nuanced expression of two notable hillside vineyard origins found on historic Howell Mountain and Soda Canyon. With vibrant aromas of black fruit, red fruit and hints of cedar, the nose of this beguiling Bordeaux-style blend invites immediate interest and curiosity. On the palate, the wine offers ripe black cherry and blackberry notes, accented with touches of black tea, bramble and spice. Revealing a pleasing acidity and finely grained tannins; the wine’s mid-palate is marked by a supple, sinewy texture and freshness. Exuberantly youthful at release, the wine is lightly muscled and agile, with traces of pluck, character and complexity emerging at just the right time. If an analogy can be drawn to the gifted screen actor, Christian Bale (earlier in his career: 3:10 to Yuma, or Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight), we think that you'll see an award-winning performance ready for the uncorking!

Approaching a mysterious opacity with its deeply dark ruby hues, Black List XX, our opening release for 2020, (and twentieth Black List wine produced in series), is envisioned to be a fitting tribute to the very first wine released under this imprimatur back in 2013. Then, as in now, we are pleased to present this selection as a quintessential example of our winemaking philosophy. Note: for this and among subsequent Black List releases, we will be proud to feature additionally favored single-appellation wines for your anticipated enjoyment.
Vibrant with aromas of black fruit, rose petal, pipe tobacco, and cherry cola, this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon shows off the glories emanating from the vintage’s exceptional growing season. Exuberant and expressive on the attack, the wine’s volume and density are notable, revealing nuanced flavors of blackberry, cassis, along with hints of wild raspberry, sweet oak, graphite, and baking spices. Featuring fine supple tannins and a pleasing acidity through the mid-palate, the wine finishes with resolve, …and a wink to the vineyard’s colorful founder and friend, John (F’ing!) Caldwell.

Gorgeously deep ruby in the glass, our 2017 Napa Valley Cabernet opens with the alluring aromas of black fruit, dried herbs and earthiness. Vibrantly direct on the attack, this chiseled blend of cabernet and merlot invites interest with a toothsome panoply of flavor notes: dense blackberry, black plum, anise, and hints of black tea, complemented by a savory meatiness through the mid-palate that makes for a satisfying weightiness and volume. Aged twenty-two months in 42% new French oak, the wine reveals a lightly muscled structure and pleasing acidity…that should allow for enjoyment at release through the next 12-15 years. Vibrant, assertive and displaying a surprising balance of sinew and agility; the wine is reminiscent of the San Francisco Forty-Niners enormously talented All-Pro tight-end, George Kittle (#85) on one of his memorable gallops to the end zone…leaving hapless defenders foundering in his wake.

Long before many of us succumbed to the addiction that attends binge-watching our favorite TV- shows on Netflix, Hulu, etc.; some may recall the game-changing series, “24”, that starting on November 6, 2001, ran for eight remarkable seasons. Garnering 76 Emmy nominations, and 20 awards during this timeframe, “24” featured a young Kiefer Sutherland in the lead role of Jack Bauer, a special agent deployed by a U.S. counterterrorism unit,… waging battle against the forces of evil in a post-9/11 world. Bauer and the show’s creators captured our rapt attention in a fashion that changed the way we interacted with television as a popular medium.
The release of our 24th Black List wine may well elicit similar, but slightly different responses. While we can’t promise that this wine’s arrival will get your adrenaline pumping; we do believe that pouring your first glass may arouse appropriate anticipation. Dark ruby in the glass, the wine offers heady aromas of black fruits, violets, and underbrush, suggestive of its force to be reckoned-with. The first sip does not demur, featuring an attack marked by crushed blackberry, blueberries, dark cherry, stone, and earthyferrous accents. Fermented in puncheons and stainless-steel tanks (7-days cold-soak, 23-days on-skins), the
wine is aged for 18-months in 70% new French oak,…to reveal firm, grainy tannins, an underlying freshness, handsome layering, and a grand finish. Direct and uninhibited, the wine may be compared to the vibrant, dashing British Formula-One driver, James Hunt, who raced for Team-McLaren to win the 1976
Formula One/World Championship. Those who followed Hunt’s brilliant career (chronicled in part in the Ron-Howard-directed-film, Rush) may recall that the #24 also adorned Hunt’s early F-1 race cars.

Nearly inky, and rapturously ruby red in hue, the 25th edition of our most coveted wines is a fitting tribute to the deft and discernment that attends the artistry of Philippe Melka and our winemaking team. The nose is vibrant, arousing the olfactory with wafts of black fruit, cherry, and a nod to marzipan. More follows in the wine’s attack, as notes of ripe blackberry, dark cherry, cola, spice, and earth bring it on. Aged eighteen months in 50% new French Oak, the wine’s refined structure is marked by a pleasing acidity and just
enough grip to remind us of how well lower Napa cabernets can play with Petite Sirah secured from the acclaimed confines of the acclaimed upper valley. Fresh and direct, yet mindfully well-mannered, this captivating red blend offers winsome layering and depth, ultimately finishing with refinement and resolve …in a manner that reminds us of the storied David Copperfield, whose Dickensian arc so ably sets the standard for any narrative, literary or otherwise.
The backbone cabernet for this notable wine is grown on a unique parcel located in the Soda Canyon district, just south of the Stags Leap AVA at the cooler end of Napa Valley. Here, the soils are loamy, rocky and deep, supporting bigger and stronger vines that lend themselves to generous, layered wines noted for refinement and nuanced acidity. The marvelous Petite Sirah hails from the historic Palisades Vineyard, located directly below the high cliffs of the Palisades in a narrow riparian canyon, one mile north
of the town of Calistoga.

Deeply dark-ruby red in the glass, the glorious outcome to 2016’s nearly perfect growing season is on fine display in this eleventh vintage of our signature cabernet. With a steady, mild July and August, followed by a series of warm days at the end of the growing season, our vineyard blocks were able to progress to exquisite ripeness. Emboldened by these conditions, aromas of black fruit, finely milled oak, cherry cola and hints of eucalyptus signal “Game-ON!”, while surreptitiously providing only a glimpse of the wine’s attack that lies patiently in wait. Teasing flavors of ripe blackberry, cassis, pomegranate and cocoa nib taunt the palate against the backdrop of a handsomely-muscled structure defined by finely grained tannins and sweet oak. Displaying remarkable balance, layered complexity and delicate acidity; the wine’s hallmarks of power, agility and finesse reveal themselves, allowing for a gracefully arcing stride to a lengthy and triumphant finish. Admiring the phenomenally gifted Giannis Antetokounmpo (a.k.a. the “Greek Freak”) gliding through the NBA’s hardwood en route to one of his gravity-defying leaps through the paint; one can’t help but think that the Milwaukee Buck’s power forward-unicorn and our signature Cabernet may have something in common.
