Magnums and More

The 2014 Cor Leonis Cabernet is the epitome of our winemaking philosophy. With its ruby red hues beckoning; aromas of black cherry, and softly tanned leather alluringly announce the wine’s arrival. Upon entry, one’s palate is greeted by a teasing mélange of dense black fruit, plum and wild raspberry, accompanied by hints of cedar and baking spices. With barrel aging at 28 months in 92% new French oak, the winemaker’s delicate oak treatment frames the wine handsomely, revealing a notable structure, deft layering, and a beguiling complexity. Featuring finely grained tannins and a stony-fresh minerality, the wine concludes with a long lingering finish, making for a judicious juxtaposition of power, refinement, and finesse.

This richly expressive wine draws its prized fruit from Beckstoffer’s heralded To Kalon Vineyard, St. Helena, and Caldwell Vineyard’s legendary Block-15 – whose vines have flourished in the rocky, volcanic soils of the heralded Coombsville District for over 30 years. The clone of Cabernet grown on this vineyard is prized for its complexity and depth, and the company of wines sourced from this vineyard is noteworthy.

Ruby red in the glass, this tantalizing blend signals its arrival with precociously heady aromas of black cherry and plum, complemented by hints of lightly toasted anise and baking spices. True to the storied upper reaches of Howell Mountain, flavors of ripe blackberry, black tea and peppercorn give way to a rustic mid-palate, with a pleasing acidity, and notable structure in-play. Aged 26 months in 31% new French Oak, the wine’s oak framing reveals what comes when skilled handling is deftly applied to fruit from this heralded appellation. The result reveals a teasing, but feisty and focused Hillside Blend, whose muscularity and nimbleness present a beguiling, layering of juxtapositions. With the wine’s pre-release staged during this summer’s season of movie blockbusters, we invite you to consider how this blend might compare to the lithesome Diana, Princess of the Amazon’s (a.k.a. With an inviting nose of blackberry, plum, anise seed, and cedar, our signature 100% Cabernet presents a richly nuanced study of power, complexity, and finesse. On the palate, the attack is clearly characterized by the wine’s pleasing acidity, purity, and exceptional balance, giving way to a marvelous mélange of concentrated black fruit, cocoa nib, accented by hints of freshly drawn espresso, wet stone and flint. Smooth, creamy tannins and sweet oak contribute to the wine’s delineated structure and complexity, leading to a long and eloquent finish that resonates with gravitas and purpose. Recalling the masterful screen actor, Morgan Freeman, a comparison of “fine finishes” compels us to recall his portrayal of the humble, but profoundly wise Ellis “Red” Redding, in The Shawshank Redemption, whose soulful grace and substance are conveyed at the close of this remarkable film’s memorable rooftop scene:

“We sat and drank with the sun on our shoulders, and felt like free men. Hell, we could have been tarring the roof of one of our own houses. We were the lords of all creation. As for Andy, he spent that break hunkered in the shade, a strange little smile on his face, watching us drink his beer.”

With the rave reviews and rapid sell-out of its 2012 predecessor, our 2013 Howell Mountain Hillside Blend finds itself on the heels of a very “tough act to follow.” And yet, our prized blocks on this rustic hillside have come through once again…delivering a resounding testimonial to this remarkable AVA high above the fog line.
Deeply garnet in color, the wine presents a fascinating nose - expressing bewitching notes of black cherry, cedar, and hints of eucalyptus. The wine’s playful aromatics, however, prove to be a clever feint for the “dare-me” dance on the palate that ensues. Rich ripe, intense flavors intermingle teasingly …calling out juicy blackberries and blueberries accented by wet stone, and a touch of savory wild mushrooms. While the wine’s underlying structure, complexity and nectary palate weight provide an unmistakable bass-line to its exuberant flavors and chewy tannins, the wine comes together splendidly for a finish that is long and satisfying. Carefully aged with 31% new French oak for 25 months, the wine will age handsomely over the next 12-15 years.
